It all started with a fish called Wanda. Wanda was the largest of three trophy largemouth bass John Hope caught within a week of each other in Houston County Lake and implanted with radio transmitters 16 years ago. That week marked the beginning of an amazing story that has established John as a nationally recognized expert on the behavior of trophy largemouth bass. John and his late wife, Wanda, tracked more than 30 largemouth bass ranging from seven pounds to 15 pounds, eight ounces on lakes throughout the nation. The tracking program also involved other species, including walleye and a couple of trophy smallmouth bass. The first 10 years of John's tracking program resulted in, Tracking Trophy Bass, a comprehensive book on locating and catching trophy fish. The book was very well received in the angling community and soon sold out. John and co-author Jesse Miller are in the process of preparing the book for its second printing. The new edition will include new information that has been garnered through John's continuous research. In 1991 John took that research program to new depths. He began diving and filming a 10 pound plus largemouth bass named Amistad Annie on Lake Amistad near Del Rio. |
![]() He is a writer for several publications, including Honey Hole Magazine and Black Bass, the TBBU's official publication, and he also fishes in several tournament circuits, including the Honey Hole family circuit and the Johnny Davis team tournaments. Besides all of these activities, John has assembled a film production team that is producing outdoor documentaries. High on the list of documentaries is a complete explanation of the previously mentioned "funnel" fishing system which is probably the most dramatic result of the longest running research program on trophy black bass. |
